Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon is expected to testify before the New York City Council as lawmakers consider legislation introducing safeguards for artificial intelligence, Reuters reported, citing Bloomberg.
Council Speaker Julie Menin requested his appearance and has encouraged industry whistleblowers to share their concerns. Bloomberg cited people familiar with the matter; Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.
Coxon left Anthropic in September after publicly warning about potentially catastrophic consequences from advanced AI and criticizing developers’ approach to safety.
The anticipated testimony comes amid a wider debate over whether voluntary industry commitments provide sufficient protection. Reuters reported Saturday that the Trump administration had announced an agreement involving technology companies that includes internal safeguards and third-party audits, but lacks enforcement mechanisms or penalties for noncompliance.
Public concern is also growing. A Reuters/Ipsos poll published in September found that three-quarters of Americans worried AI companies had not done enough to prevent serious harm to society. That concern forms the backdrop to lawmakers’ efforts to examine stronger oversight of the technology.
