The New York Yankees shut out the Mets 2–0 on Sunday in the final game of the Subway Series, moving within one win of clinching a postseason berth.
Ben Rice gave the Yankees an early lead with a leadoff home run, and Austin Wells added a solo shot in the third inning. Starting pitcher Cam Schlittler made those two runs stand up, allowing just one hit over six scoreless innings while striking out eight batters.
The Mets kept the game close behind starter Christian Scott, who gave up only three hits in six innings. But their lineup could not break through against Schlittler or the Yankees’ bullpen, which preserved the shutout over the final three innings.
The win was the Yankees’ 18th in their last 26 games and lowered their magic number—the combination of Yankees wins and rival losses needed to secure a playoff place—to one.
