Eligible New York residents are expected to begin receiving one-time energy rebate checks later this month, offering some relief from rising utility costs. The New York Post reports that distribution is set to begin September 21.
The rebates are part of New York State’s $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate, or POWER, program. Payments will depend on income and tax-filing status: eligible single filers earning under $150,000 will receive $100; joint filers earning between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $150; and joint filers earning under $150,000 will receive $200. The state says checks will be mailed between September and December.
Eligibility is based on a timely filed 2024 New York State resident income tax return. Recipients must have been full-time state residents that year, fall within the income limits and not have been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return, according to the governor’s office.
Although intended to help with energy costs, the payment is a mailed check, not an automatic reduction on an electricity bill. The state has confirmed the September-to-December mailing window; the specific September 21 start date comes from the newspaper report.
