New York City police are investigating a series of unusual incidents involving people entering and emerging from the city’s sewer system, after a new video showed several individuals climbing out of a manhole near Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.
The latest incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. on August 18, near Seventh Avenue and 32nd Street. Video circulating on social media showed three people wearing overalls and headlamps climbing from the manhole before leaving the area. Police said no arrests have been made in connection with the latest incident and the investigation remains underway.
NYPD detectives say they believe many of the people involved in similar incidents are migrants searching underground for objects of value that can be recovered, used or sold. Investigators said previous encounters with people entering the sewer network indicated that scavenging for valuables was a motive.
The Penn Station episode is not an isolated case. Earlier this year, surveillance cameras recorded groups entering or emerging from manholes in Brooklyn and Queens. Four people were arrested following incidents in Williamsburg and Gravesend in May, with authorities saying those involved told police they had been searching for valuables.
Despite the unusual scenes and the sensitive location of the latest incident, authorities have so far reported no evidence of damage to critical infrastructure or an immediate threat to the public. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection inspected the area following the latest sighting and said the infrastructure was safe.
Officials have nevertheless stressed that unauthorized entry into New York’s underground sewer network is illegal and extremely dangerous. The system contains hazards including toxic gases, sudden flooding, unstable surfaces and confined spaces that can quickly become life-threatening.
The repeated sightings have attracted significant attention online, but investigators are continuing to distinguish speculation from evidence. Authorities have not established that every incident is connected, and the investigation into the group seen near Penn Station remains ongoing.
