New York City is facing another stretch of dangerous summer weather, with high temperatures and oppressive humidity combining to push heat-index values toward 100°F (38°C) across parts of the city.
The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory in effect for Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island through Saturday evening, warning that heat-index values could reach around 100°F.
Friday’s conditions are expected to remain hot and humid, while thunderstorms developing later in the day could produce heavy downpours and strong wind gusts. Areas with poor drainage could be particularly vulnerable if intense rainfall develops over a short period.
The combination of extreme heat and high humidity poses an increased health risk, particularly for older adults, people with chronic medical conditions and residents without access to air conditioning. New York City health officials advise residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity, remain hydrated and spend time in air-conditioned locations during periods of extreme heat.
Authorities are also urging New Yorkers to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions as thunderstorms could create localized flooding and travel disruptions.
The unsettled conditions come as the city continues to contend with one of the most persistent hazards of the summer season: prolonged heat amplified by high humidity, which can make outdoor temperatures feel significantly hotter than the actual reading.
