An SUV overturned and slammed into a home in Jamaica, Queens, on Wednesday afternoon, leaving significant damage and renewing residents’ concerns about dangerous driving in the neighborhood.
The crash happened at approximately 3:20 p.m. at 177-29 115th Avenue, where the vehicle rolled over before striking the side of a one-story house. The impact tore a hole into the building and prompted New York City authorities to issue a partial vacate order because of the damage.
A resident, Dahriel Gonzalez, was relaxing on his couch when the SUV struck the property. He described hearing a powerful impact that sent objects flying inside the home. Gonzalez immediately called 911 after seeing the crashed vehicle outside.
Firefighters rescued the driver from the overturned Jeep, cutting the person out of the vehicle before transporting them to Elmhurst Hospital. The driver’s condition was not immediately available. Authorities have not yet established what caused the driver to lose control.
For the homeowners, however, the incident is part of a much larger problem. They told ABC7 that this is the fourth time their property has been struck or damaged by reckless drivers. Previous incidents reportedly involved vehicles crashing into fences, driving onto the lawn and striking part of the house.
The city has already installed speed bumps along 115th Avenue, but residents say additional measures are necessary. They are specifically calling for another stop sign near 177th Place, arguing that drivers frequently approach the area too quickly before turning toward the corner property.
Wednesday’s crash has intensified those calls for action, with residents hoping authorities will introduce additional traffic-safety measures before another vehicle loses control — potentially with more serious consequences.
