New York City police are investigating the suspicious death of a 19-year-old man who was discovered inside an apartment in Staten Island, with authorities working to determine what happened in the period leading up to his death.
Officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Foxwood Square Condos on Elmwood Park Drive in New Springville. Police found the young man unconscious and lying on the living-room floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police sources cited by local media, investigators observed bruising and swelling around his wrists and ankles, while his protruding ribs raised concerns that he may have been severely malnourished. Authorities are investigating whether the injuries were connected to his death.
Police are questioning the victim’s mother and stepfather as investigators examine conflicting accounts of what happened inside the residence. ABC7 reported that the mother told authorities she heard a thud and believed her son had fallen, but detectives said aspects of that account did not appear consistent with what officers observed at the scene.
The discovery has unsettled residents of the condominium complex. Some neighbors told local media that they rarely saw the young man, while others said they had not known that a 19-year-old lived in the apartment.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death. As of the latest reports, no arrests or criminal charges have been announced, and the victim’s identity has not been publicly released.
The NYPD investigation remains ongoing as detectives gather evidence and attempt to establish whether the teenager’s injuries, apparent malnutrition, or other circumstances contributed to his death.
