The New York Police Department (NYPD) has honored 194 officers for their outstanding bravery during the Midtown Manhattan mass shooting, recognizing their courage, coordination, and decisive actions that helped prevent further loss of life in one of the city’s most harrowing incidents of the year.
Ceremony at One Police Plaza
In a solemn yet proud ceremony held at One Police Plaza, Police Commissioner Edward Caban praised the officers for embodying “the highest ideals of the department.” The honorees included patrol officers, detectives, emergency service unit (ESU) personnel, and paramedics who responded to the active shooter situation earlier this year.
“Their rapid response, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to duty saved countless lives,” Commissioner Caban said. “In moments of chaos, they brought calm. In the face of danger, they stood their ground.”
The awards were presented in front of city officials, families, and fellow officers, marking one of the largest commendation ceremonies by the NYPD in recent memory.
The Incident
The Midtown shooting, which occurred in July near West 45th Street and Sixth Avenue, left several injured and two dead before police neutralized the gunman within minutes. Witnesses described scenes of panic as shots rang out in a crowded business district during lunchtime.
According to NYPD reports, officers arrived on the scene in under three minutes, evacuating civilians, securing perimeters, and preventing the attacker from entering nearby buildings.
Surveillance footage later confirmed that coordinated efforts between patrol and emergency response units were critical in containing the situation.
Voices from the Field
Among those honored was Officer Marisol Vega, who helped escort more than a dozen civilians to safety while under fire. “We don’t think — we act,” she said. “That’s what we’re trained for. You hope you never face it, but when it happens, you just move.”
Several honorees were also recognized posthumously for their sacrifice and service, with their families receiving medals of valor on their behalf.
City Leaders Commend the NYPD
Mayor Eric Adams commended the officers’ courage and discipline, calling their actions “a reminder of what New York’s finest truly represent.” He added that the event reinforced the city’s ongoing investment in emergency preparedness and interagency response systems.
“We saw courage under fire — literally,” Adams said. “These men and women turned potential tragedy into a story of heroism.”
A Moment of Reflection
The ceremony also paid tribute to first responders suffering from trauma and stress in the aftermath of such incidents. Police Chaplain Father Mychal Duffy led a brief moment of silence, urging continued mental health support for officers who endure the pressures of frontline policing.
Outlook
As investigations continue into the motives behind the Midtown attack, today’s recognition stands as a testament to the NYPD’s readiness and valor.
For many in attendance, it was not just a celebration of bravery, but a reaffirmation of unity — in a city that relies daily on the steady resolve of those who protect it.
