Pressure Mounts to Revive Hunts Point Produce Market Upgrade in the Bronx

0

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing calls to reconsider a stalled $650 million redevelopment of Hunts Point Produce Market, with supporters arguing that modern facilities could reduce diesel pollution while strengthening New York City’s food supply.

The proposal would replace four warehouses with two facilities equipped to reduce reliance on refrigerated trailers. However, disagreements over the design disrupted the deal. City Comptroller Mark Levine has urged the administration to preserve the project, citing its economic and environmental importance.

Pollution remains central to the debate. The market’s refrigeration trailers and surrounding truck traffic contribute to poor air quality in the South Bronx, where residents have long raised concerns about respiratory health.

Mamdani has said the existing proposal will not proceed, while maintaining that modernization and electrification remain goals. Supporters are calling for revisions that address operators’ concerns and retain years of planning. The redevelopment’s future remains unresolved.
