New HUD Guidance Offers Hope for Nearly 6,300 New York Households Facing Loss of Rental Aid

Nearly 6,300 New York City households could retain their rental assistance under new federal guidance. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to replace expiring Emergency Housing Vouchers with longer-term Tenant Protection Vouchers, Gothamist reported Tuesday.

The replacement assistance is scheduled to begin in December. HUD told the outlet that it intends to cover households with active Emergency Housing Voucher leases as of September 30, 2026.

The announcement offers a potential route to stability for renters who feared losing their homes when existing funding ended. However, New York City’s share of the $600.6 million nationwide allocation remains unclear, and local housing agencies are awaiting further details.

City officials welcomed the guidance, while housing advocates emphasized that funding and implementation still need confirmation. For affected tenants, the next step is receiving clear instructions from the agencies administering their assistance.
