NJ Transit passengers faced delays, cancellations and diverted trains on Monday after an Amtrak track problem in a Hudson River tunnel disrupted service into and out of New York Penn Station. The disruption affected much of the agency’s rail network during the morning commute.
Early service alerts warned of delays of up to 30 minutes. As the disruption continued, waiting times increased to as much as an hour, and Midtown Direct trains were rerouted to Hoboken. Several individual services were also canceled.
To help passengers complete their journeys, rail tickets and passes were temporarily accepted on NJ Transit buses, participating private bus services and PATH at designated stations. Direct service to Manhattan later resumed, although delays continued while trains returned to their schedules.
By early afternoon, NJ Transit had reduced its delay estimate to 30 minutes, then to 20 minutes later in the afternoon. An agency update at approximately 4:46 p.m. said trains were operating close to schedule, with some remaining delays affecting services already underway.
The changing service conditions underscored the importance of checking individual train alerts during the disruption. Passengers planning journeys through New York Penn Station should consult NJ Transit’s current notices for departure times and any route changes.
