Residents of the South Bronx are demanding greater transparency from city officials as health authorities continue investigating a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak that has killed one person and infected at least 10 others.
The cluster is concentrated in the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods, particularly ZIP codes 10451 and 10456. Three patients remained hospitalized as officials worked to identify the source of the outbreak.
The New York City Health Department tested cooling towers throughout the affected area and detected traces of Legionella bacteria in 10 towers, including one at Yankee Stadium. All affected systems were ordered to be drained, cleaned and disinfected.
Officials stressed that the preliminary results detected bacterial DNA but did not establish whether the bacteria were alive or whether any particular cooling tower caused the infections. Further laboratory testing could take up to two weeks.
The New York Yankees said no reported cases had been linked to the stadium. The organization added that its cooling systems, installed in 2024, undergo regular water-quality testing.
During a community meeting, Bronx residents pressed health officials for clearer information about the source of the outbreak, the enforcement of cooling-tower regulations and the measures being taken to prevent additional infections.
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with Legionella bacteria. It does not normally spread from one person to another. Older adults, smokers and people with chronic lung conditions or weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.
Health officials advised anyone who has lived, worked or visited the affected neighborhoods since late August to contact a healthcare provider immediately if they develop fever, coughing or difficulty breathing. The disease can be treated effectively with antibiotics when diagnosed early.
The city says residents can continue drinking tap water, showering and using household air-conditioning systems normally while the investigation continues.
