A 99-year-old man who was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight in Manhattan has died from injuries sustained during the violent encounter, police confirmed Monday.
The victim, a longtime resident and retired landlord, was attacked in early September outside his Upper West Side apartment building when an armed assailant confronted him, demanding his wallet and personal belongings. Witnesses said the suspect pushed the elderly man to the ground, causing severe head and hip injuries before fleeing the scene with his valuables.
The man was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was later moved to a long-term care facility. Despite initial signs of recovery, he succumbed to his injuries after several weeks under medical supervision.
“He was a kind, quiet man who looked after his tenants and always greeted people with a smile,” said a neighbor. “Everyone in the building is heartbroken.”
The NYPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division has now reclassified the case as a homicide and launched an intensified investigation. Surveillance footage from nearby stores shows a masked suspect in dark clothing fleeing the area moments after the assault. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
The shocking incident has reignited concerns over street crime targeting the elderly in New York City. Officials say violent robberies in Manhattan have risen by nearly 12% in 2025 compared to last year, despite broader efforts to boost police presence in vulnerable neighborhoods.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences to the victim’s family, calling the crime “a tragic reminder that safety must remain our top priority.”
“No one — especially our seniors — should have to fear walking their own streets in daylight,” he said.
As investigators pursue leads, community leaders are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The suspect remains at large.
