New York authorities are responding to two major developments unfolding across the city: the police pursuit and fatal shooting of an armed suspect in the Bronx, and a severe weather alert as a Nor’easter storm is forecast to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and potential coastal flooding across the metropolitan area this weekend.
Police Pursuit and Shooting in the Bronx
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the incident began early Friday morning when officers attempted to stop a vehicle linked to an armed robbery near East 174th Street and Southern Boulevard. The suspect, reportedly carrying a handgun, fled on foot into a nearby residential area, prompting a brief pursuit.
Police say the confrontation ended when the suspect brandished his weapon, leading officers to open fire. The individual, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The suspect displayed a firearm and posed an immediate threat to officers and the public,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell during a press briefing. “Our officers acted to protect lives.”
A firearm was recovered at the scene, and body-camera footage is under review by the Force Investigation Division and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. No officers or civilians were injured.
Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots and helicopters overhead as police cordoned off several blocks for investigation.
“I woke up to the sound of sirens and shouting,” said one resident. “There were police everywhere — it was chaos.”
Authorities emphasized that the situation was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Nor’easter Weather System Approaching the City
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood watch for parts of New York City, Long Island, and the New Jersey shoreline, warning that a powerful Nor’easter is expected to impact the region starting late Friday night.
Meteorologists predict the system will bring 2–4 inches of rain, wind gusts up to 55 mph, and the potential for minor to moderate flooding in low-lying coastal areas, including parts of Coney Island, Staten Island, and the Rockaways.
“This storm will pack a punch,” said NWS meteorologist Karen Roberts. “Residents near the coast should prepare for strong winds, high surf, and possible power outages.”
The MTA has already begun inspecting drainage systems and flood-prone subway stations to prevent service disruptions similar to previous flooding incidents. Emergency management officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts for potential evacuations.
City on High Alert
Mayor Eric Adams addressed both developments in a statement Friday afternoon, expressing confidence in the NYPD’s handling of the Bronx incident and assuring residents that the city is fully prepared for the approaching storm.
“Our first responders are working tirelessly to keep New Yorkers safe — on the streets and during this incoming storm,” said Adams. “We urge everyone to stay informed, stay indoors during peak weather, and check in on vulnerable neighbors.”
With police investigations continuing in the Bronx and emergency crews mobilizing citywide, New York faces a tense and challenging weekend — one marked by both law enforcement action and severe weather threats.
