A 42-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing of an elderly couple inside their Queens home, a case that has deeply unsettled the local community.
The victims, both in their late seventies, were discovered earlier this week after neighbors reported smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters arriving at the scene found the couple deceased, and investigators later determined that the fire had been deliberately set to conceal the crime.
Police identified the suspect as Jameel McGriff, a convicted felon with a prior record. He now faces charges of murder, arson, and burglary. Authorities had previously described him as “armed and dangerous” during the citywide manhunt that led to his arrest.
Detectives believe McGriff forced his way into the home, attacked the couple, and then set the property ablaze. While the investigation remains ongoing, robbery is being considered as a possible motive.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz praised law enforcement for their swift action, noting that the arrest underscores the city’s determination to deliver justice to the victims and their family.
The incident has sparked concern among residents about safety for seniors across the borough. Community leaders are calling for stronger protective measures, while neighbors are planning vigils to honor the couple, remembered as kind and active members of the community.
McGriff is being held in police custody and is expected to appear in Queens Criminal Court for arraignment later this week.
