Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to supply Ukraine with Patriot missile systems, citing an urgent need to bolster the country’s air defenses against a surge in Russian attacks. The move, he said, will be financially backed by European allies.
In his most direct remarks yet on the delivery of advanced weaponry, Trump told reporters late Sunday:
“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need… I haven’t agreed on the number yet, but they are going to have some, because they do need protection.”
Trump also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying:
“Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening.”
Strategic Importance of Patriot Systems
The Patriot missile system is one of the U.S.’s most sophisticated air defense platforms. It plays a critical role in Ukraine’s efforts to intercept Russian ballistic and cruise missiles, including newer hypersonic threats. Ukraine currently lacks alternatives with similar capabilities.
Trump’s comments came on the eve of a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House, where the U.S. commitment to European defense is expected to be a key topic.
Payment Model and European Support
Trump reiterated that U.S. support would come with a condition:
“They are going to pay us 100 per cent for them, and that’s the way we want it.”
This approach aligns with Trump’s consistent view that NATO allies should contribute more financially to their own defense, particularly in relation to weapons procurement.
Growing Frustration with Russia
Trump expressed disappointment in Putin’s handling of negotiations, stating:
“I thought he was somebody that meant what he said.”
In recent weeks, Trump has voiced increasing frustration over stalled ceasefire talks and Russia’s escalating drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Ukraine’s Response and Coordination
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has long requested Patriot systems, recently securing agreements with Germany and Norway for the purchase of three systems from the U.S. He continues to advocate for at least ten.
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, to discuss further arms support, sanctions on Russia, and joint U.S.-Ukrainian weapons production.
Escalation of Russian Strikes
Russia has ramped up its air campaign, deploying Iranian-made suicide drones and cruise missiles capable of inflicting widespread damage. Reports indicate these drones have been upgraded to fly at higher altitudes, with increased speed and explosive payloads.
As geopolitical tensions persist, the delivery of Patriot systems represents a significant development in U.S. military support for Ukraine and signals a shift in Trump’s posture toward the ongoing conflict.
