It was President Joe Biden’s turn to bring some holiday spirit to the U.S. capital.
President Biden and his wife, Jill, took part in the yearly tradition of illuminating the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse, located in President’s Park on the south side of the White House.
Following a countdown from five, President Biden wished everyone a “Merry Christmas,” and the towering tree lit up in a festive display of holiday colors.
President Biden expressed that the White House holiday theme, centered around “wonder, magic, and joy,” embodies the spirit of Christmas. He emphasized that Christmas is a time to rediscover simple joys such as familiar songs and favorite recipes, engage in acts of kindness, and strengthen connections with family, friends, and faith.
President Biden highlighted that the holidays are a time to recognize the greatness of the nation because of its good-hearted people. He encouraged Americans to appreciate the blessings of living in the United States.
The National Christmas Tree, a 40-foot Norway spruce from West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest, was successfully erected despite a moment of doubt earlier in the week due to strong winds. The 101-year-old tradition proceeded as planned, symbolizing the festive spirit of the season.

The newly planted Norway spruce replaced an older tree affected by a fungal disease. Despite strong winds causing a moment of uncertainty earlier in the week, the tree was secured, and the annual ceremony proceeded as planned.
