A shooting outside New York City’s Penn Station that left an innocent bystander wounded prompted a major police investigation and the questioning of a person of interest as authorities worked to determine who fired the shot and what led to the violence.
The incident occurred near West 31st Street and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, just outside one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States. A 58-year-old man who was waiting for a cab was struck in the leg by a bullet.
Investigators said the wounded man was not believed to have been the intended target. Police determined that the shooting followed a dispute involving other individuals, with the confrontation reportedly beginning inside Penn Station before spilling into the surrounding area.
An NYPD detective who was nearby heard the gunfire and rushed to assist the victim. The officer applied a tourniquet to the man’s leg before emergency medical personnel arrived, helping control the bleeding. The victim was transported to a hospital and was subsequently released.
Authorities later questioned a person of interest as detectives continued gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage from around Penn Station. Police also released video of a man they were seeking in connection with the shooting.
The shooting generated heightened concern because it occurred during the evening commute near Penn Station, which serves large numbers of subway, Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit and Amtrak passengers.
Investigators continued working to establish the precise sequence of events, identify everyone involved and determine responsibility for the gunfire.
