Fuel Tanker Overturns Near Queens, Spilling Thousands of Gallons Into Storm Drains and Jamaica Bay Waterways

A gasoline tanker overturned near the Queens–Nassau County border on Wednesday, spilling thousands of gallons of fuel onto the roadway, into storm drains and waterways connected to Jamaica Bay, and triggering a major hazardous-materials response.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. near Meyer Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard/Rockaway Turnpike, close to John F. Kennedy International Airport. Surveillance footage showed the tanker tipping onto its side while making a turn at the intersection.

Officials said the tanker was carrying approximately 8,500 gallons of gasoline when it overturned. Early reports described the vehicle as a 3,000-gallon fuel truck, but fire officials later estimated that approximately 2,000 gallons actually leaked from a ruptured compartment.

The gasoline flowed across the roadway and entered storm drains and waterways leading toward Jamaica Bay, raising environmental concerns. Authorities brought in hazardous-materials crews, while firefighters repeatedly covered the spilled gasoline with firefighting foam to suppress potentially dangerous vapors and reduce the risk of ignition.

The emergency response involved the FDNY, Nassau County fire departments, environmental authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard. New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation was also involved in monitoring contamination and directing cleanup efforts.

Nearby workers described feeling buildings shake when the tanker hit the ground. Some businesses were instructed to shelter in place while hazardous-materials teams monitored surrounding buildings for potentially flammable vapor levels.

The tanker driver escaped safely, and officials reported no serious injuries. Three people were evaluated at the scene but did not require transportation to a hospital. Crews also began transferring the gasoline remaining inside the overturned tanker to another vehicle before attempting to lift the truck upright.

The accident forced authorities to close portions of Rockaway Turnpike, causing significant traffic disruption near the Queens–Nassau border. Nassau County police are investigating what caused the tanker to overturn.

Cleanup and environmental monitoring remain important because gasoline entered the drainage system and nearby waterways, with authorities working to contain the contamination and prevent further damage to the Jamaica Bay area.
