A 13-year-old boy was killed and another teenager was injured after a moped crash in Flushing, Queens, in a tragic incident that has renewed concerns about street safety, young riders, and the risks created by sudden hazards on busy city roads.
The crash happened on Monday afternoon on 162nd Street between 45th and 46th avenues. According to police, two 13-year-old boys were riding southbound when they swerved to avoid a driver-side door that opened into their path. The moment was reportedly captured on surveillance video.
After swerving, the moped lost control and collided with a truck that was also traveling southbound on 162nd Street. Police said the passenger fell from the moped and came into contact with the rear wheel of the truck, causing fatal injuries.
Both teenagers were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The passenger later died from his injuries, while the boy operating the moped was reported to be in stable condition. Authorities have not yet released the name of the boy who died.
The truck driver remained at the scene after the crash, and police said no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing as detectives review the circumstances of the collision, including the opened car door, the movement of the truck, and surveillance footage from the area.
The incident highlights the danger of “dooring,” when a vehicle door is opened into the path of a cyclist, scooter rider, or moped rider. In dense neighborhoods like Flushing, where parked vehicles, delivery traffic, pedestrians, and riders often share narrow streets, a single sudden movement can quickly turn deadly.
