New York Subway Riders Face Major August Disruptions as MTA Expands Track and Signal Work

New York City subway riders are facing another round of significant service disruptions as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority carries out track replacement, signal modernization and other infrastructure work across several major routes.

The L, N, R and W trains are among the services affected by the August construction program, with changes spanning Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. The MTA says the temporary disruptions are necessary to replace aging infrastructure and improve reliability.

Among the most significant upcoming changes, R train service is scheduled to be suspended during weekdays from August 24 through August 28 as crews continue work affecting the Broadway corridor. Riders are being advised to allow additional travel time and use alternative subway routes where available.

The L line is facing particularly extensive disruption. Beginning late Friday, August 21, and continuing through early Monday, August 31, there will be no L service at Canarsie–Rockaway Parkway as crews replace tracks and switches near the Brooklyn terminal.

During weekends and weekday nights, L trains will operate between 8th Avenue and Broadway Junction, while free shuttle buses will serve stations between Broadway Junction and Canarsie–Rockaway Parkway. Weekday service will operate in separate sections to maintain as much subway access as possible during the construction period.

The N and W lines are also being affected by work on the Broadway Line. The MTA announced track replacement between 57th Street–Seventh Avenue and Fifth Avenue–59th Street, with overnight changes scheduled on several dates in August, including August 25 through August 28.

The disruptions form part of a broader summer maintenance campaign across the transit system. The MTA is simultaneously carrying out signal modernization, accessibility improvements, structural repairs and track maintenance on other subway routes.

Passengers traveling during the affected periods are encouraged to check the latest MTA service information before beginning their journeys, as schedules and alternative routes can vary by time and location.
