New York City has intensified its campaign against the sale of illegal electric bikes and other high-powered mobility devices, issuing 42 cease-and-desist orders to online retailers accused of violating local safety rules.
City officials said the targeted businesses were offering electric bikes and similar devices that exceeded permitted speed, weight or technical limits for use across the five boroughs.
The enforcement action is intended to reduce risks linked to unregulated vehicles, including collisions, pedestrian injuries and battery-related fires. Authorities have warned that devices sold without meeting city standards may be unsafe for riders and other road users.
Retailers receiving the orders must stop marketing or selling non-compliant products to New York City customers. Businesses that fail to comply could face additional penalties or legal action.
The city has also urged consumers to confirm that electric bikes and batteries meet approved safety standards before making a purchase, particularly when buying from online sellers.
