The death of a 40-year-old woman who was found unresponsive inside a Brooklyn apartment earlier this month has officially been ruled a homicide, according to the New York Police Department, as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police identified the victim as Erika Miranda Tlacuatl, 40, of Brooklyn. Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:42 a.m. on August 1 at a residence on 64th Street in Brooklyn, where they discovered Tlacuatl unconscious and unresponsive inside the apartment. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner subsequently determined that her death was a homicide. News 12 reported that the medical examiner attributed the death to homicidal violence that included blunt-force trauma to the head and torso.
Police did not initially disclose the circumstances that led to Tlacuatl’s death. The homicide determination now places the case firmly within an active criminal investigation as detectives work to establish what happened inside the residence and identify anyone who may have been involved.
At the time of the latest police update, authorities had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect. The NYPD said the investigation remains ongoing.
The case has drawn attention in the Brooklyn neighborhood since Tlacuatl was discovered earlier this month. Police investigators and medical examiner personnel were seen working at the scene following the discovery of her body as authorities began gathering evidence and determining the cause of death.
With the death now officially classified as a homicide, investigators are continuing efforts to establish a timeline of events and determine who was responsible for the killing.
