Return of the Christmas Tree to Rockefeller Center: A Beloved New York Tradition Begins Again

The arrival of the iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center has officially ushered in the start of the 2025 holiday season. The massive Norway spruce, a cherished symbol of New York’s festive spirit, reached Midtown Manhattan early Saturday morning under tight coordination by city workers and volunteers.

This year’s tree, standing nearly 80 feet tall and weighing over 12 tons, was transported from upstate New York’s Schenectady County. Crowds gathered along Fifth Avenue to witness its installation — a moment that, for many New Yorkers, marks the city’s transformation into a winter wonderland.

“Every year, this tree reminds us of hope, unity, and renewal,” said Tishman Speyer CEO Rob Speyer, whose company manages Rockefeller Center. “It’s more than a decoration — it’s a tradition that brings millions together, from lifelong residents to first-time visitors.”

Once installed, workers will begin the meticulous process of decorating the tree with more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights and topping it with a Swarovski crystal star weighing about 900 pounds. The official lighting ceremony, which draws national television coverage, is scheduled for November 27, featuring performances from major artists and choirs.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition dates back to 1931, when construction workers building the complex erected a small, humble tree to lift morale during the Great Depression. Since then, it has become one of the world’s most recognizable holiday landmarks, attracting an estimated 750,000 visitors each day during the festive season.

For many, the return of the Rockefeller Center tree is more than an event — it’s a symbol of New York’s enduring energy, resilience, and sense of togetherness. As the lights prepare to shine once again, the city stands ready to celebrate another magical holiday season in the heart of Manhattan.
