New York City came alive this morning with the sound of spinning wheels and cheering crowds as “Bike MS 2025” — one of the city’s most celebrated charity cycling events — officially got underway. Thousands of riders from across the country gathered to raise awareness and funds for multiple sclerosis (MS), taking on routes of 30 and 50 miles through some of Manhattan’s most scenic streets.
A Ride with a Purpose
Organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the annual Bike MS event combines athletic spirit with philanthropy, channeling all proceeds toward research, patient support, and treatment programs for those living with the neurological disease.
“Every mile we ride brings us closer to a cure,” said Jennifer Morales, one of the event coordinators. “It’s more than a race — it’s a movement of hope, strength, and community.”
Riders began early in the morning near Pier 92 on the Hudson River, following clearly marked paths that wind along the West Side Highway before looping through key city landmarks.
Routes and Road Closures
The 30-mile route focused primarily on the West Side, offering riders a moderate yet picturesque journey along the Hudson River Greenway. The more challenging 50-mile route extended deeper into the boroughs, offering experienced cyclists an endurance test through city streets and bridges before circling back into Manhattan.
To accommodate the event, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) announced temporary closures and restricted access along parts of the West Side Highway, 12th Avenue, and portions of Riverside Park. These closures are expected to last until early afternoon, with police and event staff stationed at key intersections to manage both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Commuters and residents were advised to plan travel routes ahead of time and use public transportation whenever possible to avoid delays.
A Spirit of Unity and Resilience
Participants ranged from professional cyclists to families and survivors of MS, many riding in teams representing loved ones affected by the disease. The atmosphere along the course was filled with encouragement — supporters waved signs, volunteers handed out water, and local bands performed to keep the energy high.
“This is my fourth year riding for my sister,” said Daniel Price, a participant from Brooklyn. “Seeing thousands of people unite for one cause gives us hope that someday, MS will be a thing of the past.”
A City That Rides for a Cause
“Bike MS 2025” is part of a nationwide series of charity rides held annually in over 70 cities across the United States. Last year’s New York event raised over $3 million, funding groundbreaking research and support initiatives for more than 1 million Americans living with multiple sclerosis.
Officials expect this year’s turnout to exceed previous records, reflecting a growing culture of community engagement and health awareness in post-pandemic New York.
Safety and Celebration
Event organizers worked closely with the NYPD, FDNY, and City Parks Department to ensure safety throughout the route. Medical teams, hydration stations, and bike repair zones were set up every few miles.
As cyclists make their way through the final stretch this afternoon, the city’s skyline serves as a powerful backdrop — a symbol of resilience, unity, and collective effort.
“When you see thousands of riders pushing forward together, you realize that progress isn’t just scientific,” Morales added. “It’s human.”
The event concludes at Hudson River Park, where riders will gather for a closing ceremony celebrating their achievement and the lives touched by their journey.
