Man Arrested in Brooklyn for Assaulting Two Children on New York’s High Line

A shocking incident on Manhattan’s popular High Line walkway has led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man from Brooklyn, accused of assaulting two children — including a toddler — in broad daylight, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Witnesses say the suspect, identified as Kevin Morales, approached two families walking near the West 23rd Street section of the elevated park late Thursday afternoon. Without warning, he allegedly slapped the first child, who appeared to be around 5 years old, and moments later struck a toddler being carried by their parent.

Bystanders immediately intervened and restrained the man until police arrived. Officers from the 10th Precinct took Morales into custody at the scene without further incident. Both children were examined by emergency responders and fortunately sustained no serious injuries, though they were left visibly shaken.

“This was an unprovoked and terrifying attack in one of New York City’s most beloved public spaces,” said NYPD Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Moore. “We are thankful for the quick response from good Samaritans and officers who prevented further harm.”

Police are investigating the suspect’s mental health history and any prior criminal record. Preliminary reports suggest that Morales may have been behaving erratically before the attack, shouting incoherently and appearing disoriented.

The High Line, a 1.45-mile-long park built on a historic elevated rail line, is a major tourist and family destination, drawing thousands of visitors daily. The NYPD has announced increased patrols in the area following the incident to reassure the public.

“Parents should feel safe bringing their kids here,” said one witness. “It’s horrifying to think something like this could happen in broad daylight.”

The suspect faces multiple charges, including two counts of assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and disorderly conduct. He remains in police custody pending arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court.

Authorities emphasized that despite the isolated nature of the event, the city remains vigilant in ensuring public safety in crowded pedestrian zones such as the High Line, Times Square, and Central Park.
