Columbus Day Parade in New York Canceled Due to Severe Weather

For the first time in decades, the annual Columbus Day Parade in New York City was canceled as powerful storms swept across the region, prompting officials to declare a state of emergency.

The parade, which traditionally draws thousands of spectators and features vibrant floats, marching bands, and cultural groups celebrating Italian-American heritage, was called off early Monday morning due to dangerous weather conditions caused by a nor’easter storm battering the East Coast.

Governor Kathy Hochul and city officials made the announcement following forecasts of heavy rain, strong winds reaching up to 60 mph, and widespread flooding across the five boroughs, Long Island, and Westchester County.

“Safety must come first,” said Governor Hochul. “While the Columbus Day Parade is a cherished New York tradition, we cannot put lives at risk under such severe conditions.”

Organizers of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, which oversees the parade, expressed disappointment but said the decision was made in consultation with emergency management teams. The foundation noted that they are exploring options for a rescheduled celebration or virtual event later in the month.

The cancellation affects more than 100 participating groups, including school bands, community associations, and cultural organizations from across the United States. City officials also suspended outdoor events, closed several parks, and warned residents to stay indoors until weather conditions improve.

Despite the cancellation, many New Yorkers took to social media to share their pride and post photos from previous parades under the hashtag #ColumbusDayNYC, while others praised the authorities for prioritizing public safety amid the storm emergency.

The storm is expected to subside by Tuesday morning, but officials warn that flood cleanup and infrastructure repairs may take several days to complete.
