A 60-year-old woman has died after being struck by an electric bike near the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Monday afternoon, according to New York City police.
Authorities say the woman had just stepped off a city bus and was attempting to cross Flushing Avenue when the speeding e-bike collided with her. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud crash before seeing the victim lying motionless on the street as bystanders rushed to help.
Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later due to the severity of her injuries.
The operator of the e-bike remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police are now examining surveillance footage from nearby buildings to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, including the speed of the e-bike and whether traffic signals were obeyed.
Residents and local business owners expressed deep concern over the growing number of e-bike accidents in the area. “These bikes are moving fast, and there’s little enforcement,” said one shopkeeper. “It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.”
City transportation officials have repeatedly emphasized the need for stricter regulations and safer infrastructure as e-bikes become increasingly common across New York. The investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing.
