Elon Musk Launches ‘America Party’ After Public Rift with Trump Over Massive Spending Bill

0

In a bold political move, Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political group, the America Party, following his fierce criticism of President Donald Trump’s recently passed mega-spending bill. The declaration came on July 5 through Musk’s social media platform X, where he condemned what he described as a “one-party system” driven by waste and corruption.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote, positioning the new party as an alternative to what he sees as a broken bipartisan system.

The announcement marks a dramatic shift in Musk’s political alignment. Once a key supporter of Trump, Musk reportedly spent nearly $290 million aiding Trump and Republican candidates. He also played a significant role in Trump’s early administration, leading the Department of Government Efficiency’s push to reduce the size of federal agencies.

However, relations between Musk and Trump have deteriorated sharply in recent weeks, primarily over Trump’s flagship legislation — often referred to by the former president as the “big beautiful bill.” The bill, which includes sweeping tax cuts, increases in military and immigration enforcement spending, and deep cuts to Medicaid, is projected by the Congressional Budget Office to add $3.4 trillion to the national debt over the next ten years. It also includes a $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling.

Musk did not hold back in his opposition. He criticized Republican lawmakers who voted for the bill, stating:

“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

On July 4, Musk polled users on X about their support for a new political party, framing the question around the concept of “independence from the two-party system.” The response was overwhelmingly in favor, with a 2-to-1 margin supporting the idea.

The next day, Musk declared the America Party official.

He also offered insight into how the party might operate. Rather than building a broad national infrastructure, the focus would be tactical — targeting 2 to 3 Senate races and 8 to 10 House districts to gain leverage over key legislation. Musk believes that even this limited reach could give the party kingmaker power in Congress.

This latest development adds another layer of complexity to Musk’s already high-profile political journey. While he previously hinted at stepping away from political funding — especially after his unsuccessful bid to influence a Wisconsin Supreme Court race in April — the formation of the America Party suggests a renewed and more focused engagement.

Meanwhile, the rift between Musk and Trump continues to deepen. Earlier this week, Trump threatened to eliminate federal subsidies benefiting Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. Despite a recent apology from Musk aimed at mending ties, tensions remain high.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, Musk’s new political venture could play a disruptive role, especially in tightly contested districts where just a few votes can determine legislative outcomes.

Whether the America Party evolves into a lasting force or serves as a temporary political lever remains to be seen — but Elon Musk has once again positioned himself at the center of America’s political conversation.
