President Donald Trump stated Monday that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas could be finalized in the coming days, citing a “positive” response from the Palestinian group to a U.S.-brokered peace proposal.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump welcomed Hamas’s reaction, saying, “It’s good that Hamas said they responded in a positive spirit.” He added that a potential agreement to halt the fighting in Gaza might be reached this week, although he admitted he had not yet been fully updated on the latest details of the negotiations.
On Friday, Hamas confirmed it had completed internal consultations and held discussions with other Palestinian factions regarding the most recent ceasefire proposal put forward by international mediators, including the United States.
In an official statement, Hamas announced it had submitted its response to the mediators, characterizing it as “positive.” The group also emphasized its willingness to immediately engage in negotiations focused on the practical steps needed to implement the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official, speaking to Reuters, described Hamas’s response as constructive and suggested it could help facilitate a final agreement to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
This development marks the latest diplomatic effort by the U.S. and other mediators to secure a ceasefire amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The coming days are likely to be pivotal as negotiators work to bring both sides closer to a resolution.
