Trump Urges Swift Passage of Sweeping Domestic Policy Bill Ahead of July 4

Former President Donald Trump is pressuring Republican lawmakers to pass a comprehensive domestic policy bill before the July 4 holiday, framing the legislation as a critical step in advancing his economic and immigration agenda.

Commonly referred to as the “Big Bill,” the proposal includes major tax reductions, expanded funding for border security, and substantial cuts to healthcare and nutrition assistance programs. Trump has described the legislation as a cornerstone of Republican policymaking, urging a Senate vote within days.

“This bill is essential to restoring American greatness and fixing the broken systems that hurt working families,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

However, the bill has sparked intense debate in Washington. While it has strong support among Trump-aligned Republicans, some moderates within the party, along with nearly all Democrats, have raised alarms about its projected fiscal consequences and impact on vulnerable communities.

An analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the bill would add approximately $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next ten years. The House-passed version includes $625 billion in Medicaid spending reductions, which analysts warn could result in the loss of health coverage for up to 7.6 million Americans. The Senate version may include even deeper cuts.

Critics argue the legislation could force states to scale back Medicaid coverage, particularly affecting rural hospitals and low-income populations. “This bill risks devastating access to healthcare for millions,” one Senate aide noted.

Despite growing opposition, Trump is doubling down on his call for swift action, casting the vote as a litmus test for Republican commitment to fiscal conservatism and immigration enforcement. “Republicans must act now to reduce taxes, secure the border, and put America first,” he said.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill by July 1. The outcome will not only shape federal policy for years to come but may also significantly influence the political landscape ahead of the 2026 midterm elections—and could further cement Trump’s influence as he continues to weigh another presidential run.
