The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) announced that there will be no curbside trash, recycling, or compost collection on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in observance of Election Day. The temporary suspension applies citywide to all residential pickup routes.
Service Interruption and Instructions
Sanitation officials urged residents to hold their waste, recycling, and compost materials until collection resumes the following day, Wednesday, November 5. Trash placed out too early may result in summonses under city sanitation rules, which restrict when and how refuse can be set on sidewalks.
“We want to ensure Election Day runs smoothly across the city, including allowing our crews and residents to fully participate,” said a DSNY spokesperson. “Collections will resume on schedule the next day.”
The department also reminded property owners and tenants that all scheduled recycling pickups will shift one day forward for the remainder of the week.
Citywide Coordination
The suspension coincides with citywide logistical adjustments during Election Day, which traditionally sees increased traffic and parking restrictions near polling sites. Sanitation trucks and crews are often redeployed to support polling logistics and street safety operations.
Public Guidance
Residents are encouraged to:
-
Confirm their next collection date via the DSNY app or nyc.gov/dsny.
-
Avoid blocking sidewalks or curbs with waste bags during the suspension.
-
Use the city’s Smart Compost bins where available for small food waste disposal.
Why It Matters
With millions of voters expected to turn out, the city aims to minimize congestion and ensure a clean and orderly Election Day environment. The DSNY’s temporary service pause reflects the broader coordination between municipal departments to balance civic engagement and urban management.
