Warning About a Suspected ‘Slasher’ in Brooklyn

0

Police in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood have issued an urgent warning to residents after three people were attacked over the weekend by a suspect believed to be a serial slasher. Each of the victims was cut on the left side of the face in what police describe as unprovoked, late-night assaults.

Details of the Attacks

Authorities say the first incident occurred late Friday near Albany Avenue and Clarendon Road, followed by two similar attacks within 24 hours in the same vicinity. All victims were treated at local hospitals and are expected to recover, but investigators are calling the pattern “disturbing” and “deliberate.”

According to NYPD officials, surveillance footage shows a male suspect wearing a dark hoodie and mask, fleeing on foot after each assault. Detectives from the 67th Precinct are now reviewing nearby camera footage and canvassing the area for witnesses.

“These attacks appear random, which makes them especially dangerous,” said Deputy Inspector Renee Tucker. “We’re urging everyone in East Flatbush to stay alert, travel in groups when possible, and report any suspicious activity immediately.”

Public Concern and Safety Measures

The assaults have reignited debate about street safety in Brooklyn, particularly around public-transit corridors and residential streets. Over the past year, NYPD data shows a 12 percent rise in felony assaults in the borough, though most involve known individuals rather than strangers.

Local community boards are calling for increased nighttime patrols and better lighting around subway stations and bus stops. Residents expressed anxiety but also solidarity, with neighborhood watch groups pledging to assist police patrols and distribute safety alerts.

Citywide Response

Mayor Eric Adams’ office said in a statement that the administration is coordinating with the NYPD to ensure “swift and visible deployment” of officers in East Flatbush and surrounding areas. City Hall emphasized that “protecting New Yorkers’ sense of safety in their own neighborhoods remains a top priority.”

Meanwhile, the police have released a hotline — 1-800-577-TIPS (Crime Stoppers) — urging anyone with information to come forward anonymously.

Outlook

While investigators have not yet determined a motive, police believe the suspect may still be in the area. Patrol units and detectives remain on high alert, and residents are advised to avoid isolated routes at night until further notice.
