State of Emergency Declared in NYC, Long Island, and Westchester County as Nor’easter Slams the Area

Authorities have declared a state of emergency across New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County as a powerful nor’easter storm brings torrential rain, fierce winds, and coastal flooding to the region.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the emergency declaration early Monday morning, citing “life-threatening conditions” and urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency response teams have been deployed across the tri-county area to manage flooding, downed power lines, and transportation disruptions.

Meteorologists warn that the storm — with wind gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour — could continue through Tuesday morning, causing widespread power outages and road closures. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued flash flood warnings for low-lying and coastal areas, with storm surges expected along parts of the southern shorelines of Long Island.

Public transportation is also heavily affected, with several MTA subway and commuter lines reporting partial suspensions due to flooding. The New York City Department of Transportation advised that bridges and tunnels may experience closures or delays depending on wind intensity.

In response, emergency shelters have been opened in vulnerable areas, and city officials are coordinating with the Office of Emergency Management to ensure rapid deployment of rescue units where needed.

Governor Hochul emphasized:

“New Yorkers should take this storm seriously. We are working closely with local officials to keep everyone safe and ensure critical services remain available.”

The storm comes as the Northeast braces for one of the most intense autumn weather systems in recent years, with rainfall totals in some areas already exceeding 4 inches. Officials urged residents to prepare for extended disruptions as cleanup and power restoration efforts could take several days once the storm passes.
