A residential building in the Bronx partially collapsed early this morning, prompting an extensive emergency response as rescue teams work to locate and assist those who may be trapped under the debris.
According to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), the incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. in a multi-story apartment complex near East 183rd Street. Witnesses reported hearing a loud rumble followed by clouds of dust as part of the structure gave way, leaving several apartments exposed and debris scattered across the street.
Firefighters and specialized urban search-and-rescue units quickly arrived on the scene, supported by paramedics and structural engineers. Officials confirmed that several residents were evacuated from the building and surrounding properties as a precaution. At least four people were reported injured, two of them in serious condition, and were transported to local hospitals.
Mayor Eric Adams and emergency management officials are monitoring the situation closely. “Our priority right now is saving lives and ensuring the safety of everyone in the area,” the mayor said in a brief statement.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collapse, though preliminary investigations suggest possible structural damage or maintenance issues. Inspectors are assessing the stability of the remaining structure, and nearby streets have been closed to facilitate rescue efforts.
As the search continues, residents displaced by the collapse are being offered temporary shelter and assistance. City officials urged the public to avoid the area while emergency operations remain underway.
