‘Wake Up’ America: Gavin Newsom Warns Trump May Seek a Third Term

0

California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a stark warning that President Donald Trump could attempt to remain in office beyond his constitutional limit in 2028, potentially using federal agents to influence or rig future elections in favor of himself and his Republican allies.

Speaking at POLITICO’s “The California Agenda: Sacramento Summit” in a 48-minute interview, Newsom gave some of his strongest remarks yet about Trump, the state of U.S. democracy, and the risks of authoritarianism.

A Warning of Authoritarian Drift

Newsom described the United States as being on the “precipice of authoritarianism”, pointing to Trump’s use of federal immigration officers as what he called “the largest private police force in history” deployed for political advantage.

“The rule of law is being replaced by the rule of Don,” Newsom declared, repeatedly urging the audience to “wake up” to what he views as an escalating threat. He cautioned that the Trump administration may seek to send federal agents to polling places and voting booths in upcoming elections, raising fears about voter intimidation and electoral manipulation.

Suggesting Trump Wants More Than Two Terms

Newsom argued that Trump’s actions suggest an ambition to remain in office indefinitely. “I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” he told the moderator, noting that he had personally been sent multiple “Trump 2028” hats by Trump supporters.

He also recalled a February Oval Office meeting in which Trump pointed to a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms. Newsom said he interpreted that gesture as symbolic of Trump’s desire to defy the two-term limit.

Mockery, Social Media, and Trump’s Spending

The California governor, who has not ruled out a presidential bid in 2028, also mocked Trump’s lavish spending, referencing the construction of a 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom. “Who spends two hundred million dollars on a ballroom at their home and then leaves the house?” Newsom asked.

He further noted that Trump has shown visiting foreign leaders “Trump 2028” merchandise, suggesting that the president’s hints about extending his time in power are not jokes but serious signals of intent.

Historical and Constitutional Context

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms, limits U.S. presidents to two elected terms. Before that, presidents followed the precedent set by George Washington, who stepped down voluntarily after two terms.

Although Trump has previously said he would “probably not” run for an unconstitutional third term, he has continued to tease the possibility publicly, fueling speculation and controversy.

Newsom’s Closing Warning

Newsom, who has recently gained national attention for sharply criticizing Trump on social media, closed his remarks with a dire message:

“You think he’s joking about 2028? If you don’t stop Trump’s assault on democracy, you will lose your country.”

The California governor’s comments underscore growing concern among Democrats that Trump’s rhetoric—and his actions—may push the United States into a direct confrontation with the limits of its democratic system.
