In a significant law enforcement operation, the FBI has arrested 36-year-old Brad Kenneth Spafford of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, uncovering what is believed to be the largest collection of homemade explosive devices in the bureau’s history.
Discovery of Explosive Devices
On December 17, 2024, federal agents executed a search warrant at Spafford’s 20-acre property following a tip from a neighbor. The search revealed over 150 improvised explosive devices, primarily pipe bombs, stored in a detached garage. Some were labeled “lethal” and organized by color, indicating a high level of preparation.
Additionally, agents found a jar containing hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD), a highly unstable explosive material, stored in a freezer alongside food items. This reckless storage posed significant risks to Spafford’s family, including two young children residing in the home.
Investigation and Arrest
The investigation began in early 2023 after a neighbor reported Spafford’s activities, including the loss of three fingers in a 2021 explosion involving homemade explosives. The neighbor also noted Spafford’s use of President Joe Biden’s photographs for target practice and expressed concerns about his extremist views.
Spafford was initially arrested on charges of possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle. During the search, authorities also discovered a notebook containing recipes for military-grade explosives and inventories of materials, further indicating the extent of his activities.

Federal prosecutors have described Spafford as an “extreme danger to the community” and are seeking to keep him in custody. He faces charges that could result in significant prison time, with each count potentially carrying a sentence of up to 10 years.
